The Selig Effect

When the Giants won the World Series, I was ecstatic. I wanted to celebrate in the traditional-American way by purchasing something commemorative.

I learned my lesson. When it comes to dealing with Major League Baseball, Bud Selig’s incompetence permeates everything. The less you have to deal with Official MLB anything, the better off you’ll be.

Edit as of January 21. This is now part 1 of 3. Part two involves lessons learned. Part three is MLB setting things straight.

November 7

Having eyed an authentic road jersey for over a decade, I decided to order one with the official World Series patch from the official MLB.com webshop. My thinking was that they would be more reliable than trying to find exactly what I wanted in a retail shop.

Or not.

Bastards.

December 4, noon

After wrestling between abandoning my desired souvenir to spite Major League Baseball out of any of my money and being an irrational Giants fan still celebrating the World Series win, I decided to go to my local Giants Dugout Store and let fate determine whether or not I’ll get a jersey.

Fate decides that I get the Jersey. Actually, even better, it’s not the stupid Coolbase one which was the only option online.

December 4, afternoon

When I get back home, I go online to cancel my order. It won’t let me. So I make my first phone call to the MLB.com shop to cancel my order. They say it’s “processing” and may not be able to be cancelled now, but they’ll mark the order just in case.

WTF. Processing? Would have been nice if they told me as much.

December 4, evening

I go back to the Dugout Store and have them remove the security tag that they forgot to remove the first time.

I don’t usually believe in God. But when I do, he’s an ironic bastard.

So. While I have yet to see the refund show up on our credit card statement, I’m reasonably confident that we can get our money back now and that this insanity is pretty much over.

Also, while I have no faith in anything Major League Baseball does now (their twitter presence is nice, but is really just a lipstick-on-a-pig operation), I can say that UPS was impeccable.
