Auteur Theory

Everybody gives me crap about the way I’ve organized my movies. I don’t understand. Everyone else orders books thematically and/or by author. Music is ordered by composer or performer. Meanwhile movies get organized alphabetically by title. It makes no sense.

We have many books,* CDs, and DVDs and we organize them all together on our bookshelves. Everything is ordered thematically first and then by author, composer, director, or performer. Even the movies.

I don’t understand why this is weird to people. Yes, one of these days, I’ll have to make a tough call about whether Harry Potter 3 goes next to Y Tu Mamá También or Harry Potter 2. But in general, the system works well and my movie collection makes a lot more sense. To me.

  1. It’s strange because most of us do not know who the director of a movie is making it difficult to keep things in their place or figure out what the organization is at first glance.
